“Our specialty encompasses a very broad spectrum. If you only do a few cases of a specific procedure each year, you never really gain meaningful experience or expertise with it. It is hard to be proficient in all aspects of plastic surgery. Find what you do well and become your best at it.”
By narrowing his practice in scope, Dr. Carlin can offer his patients truly superior care and expertise.
Dr. Carlin pursued his plastic surgery training at one of the nation's most respected institutions, Duke University Medical Center. That afforded him daily interaction with some of the most talented and brilliant minds in the specialty. Working side by side with internationally renowned leaders in plastic surgery allowed him extraordinary insight into the various aspects of the field.
Many of those surgeons were instrumental in developing not only specific plastic surgery procedures but the specialty as a whole — Drs. Donald Serafin, Nick Georgiade, Greg Georgiade, L. Scott Levin, Luis Vasconez and Greg Ruff, to name only a few. The exchange of ideas and experience from continent to continent was phenomenal, and stood as a fundamental educational building block.
Dr. C. Brett Carlin practises aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery in Columbia, South Carolina, with more than twenty years of experience. He has completed residencies in both General Surgery and Plastic Surgery, and received board certification from the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery — representing one of the few surgeons to hold dual board certification. He has since completed re-certification through the American Board of Plastic Surgery, to ensure he remains current with emerging techniques and technology.
Dr. Carlin spent his childhood years in Columbia. He graduated cum laude in Chemistry from Clemson University, then spent four years at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. His General Surgery residency took him to Birmingham, Alabama for five years, including a year as Chief Resident. He left Alabama for North Carolina, where he completed a three-year Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery fellowship at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, again serving a year as Chief Resident in Plastic Surgery. Integrated into those eight post-graduate years was a fellowship at the prestigious Christine Kleinert Institute for Hand and Microsurgery in Louisville, Kentucky.
He and his wife, Liz, married while in Charleston. They have enjoyed raising their only child, Drew, here in the Midlands. In addition to tending to his family's equestrian interests, he enjoys spending time outdoors, hunting and fishing whenever he can get away.
